Soaring Solar Power Giving Politicians Headaches

Despite cuts in subsidies, solar power has been soaring in Germany throughout 2012. According to the industry association BSW-Solar, the energy produced has risen by 45 percent, to 28 billions of kilowatt hours.

While the association and public media trumpet this fact, Chancellor Angela Merkel and her Minister of Environment Peter Altmaier remain suspiciously silent – because even after the cutbacks in summer, solar power is making electricity more costly for everybody. Germans pay the subsidies for green energy with the electricity bills. And the rising prices are increasingly bothering consumers.

Reportedly, Altmaier wants to change the subsidy system in March. An overhaul of the green energy law EEG seems unlikely before the elections in autumn, however.
